PDF, vCard and plain text codes

A PDF code points at a hosted document, a vCard carries contact details a phone can save directly, and a text code shows a short message with nothing to open. Only the PDF needs a network.

Steps

  1. For a PDF, use dynamic mode: it lets you replace the document — a new menu, a new price list — without reprinting.
  2. For a vCard, fill in only the fields you are happy to have copied; everything in it is readable by anyone who scans.
  3. For text, keep it short. A long payload makes a denser matrix that needs to be printed larger to stay readable.
  4. Export and test as usual.

How to check it worked

The PDF opens in the phone browser rather than downloading a broken file, the vCard offers to create a contact with the right name, and the text appears in full.

What usually goes wrong

  • A static PDF code, which cannot be pointed at next season’s menu.
  • A vCard with a personal mobile number on a public poster.
  • A long text payload printed too small to resolve.
