QR Codes on Packaging: What to Link Before and After the Sale

A QR code extends packaging into a digital journey. It succeeds when the value is specific, the destination is durable and the final material has been tested.

Packaging is the hardest surface a QR code lives on

A code on a poster has one job on one flat surface for a few weeks. A code on packaging is curved, printed on film or board rather than paper, scuffed in transit, sometimes frozen or refrigerated, and expected to work for the entire shelf life of the product — often years after the artwork was signed off.

It is also the surface where a reprint is most expensive, because artwork changes mean new plates, new runs and existing stock that is suddenly wrong. Every decision below is worth more here than anywhere else, for that reason alone.

Promise something specific next to the code

The weakest thing you can print beside a package code is “learn more”. It commits to nothing, so it attracts nobody, and it makes the scan feel like a risk.

Say what opens, concretely: “See how to fit it”, “Full ingredient list”, “Recipes with this cut”, “Register your warranty”, “Where this came from”. A specific promise gives someone a reason to pick up their phone in a shop aisle, which is a genuinely high bar.

The promise also has to survive the scan. A code labelled “how to use it” that lands on a marketing homepage teaches people not to scan your packaging again.

Before the purchase: help the decision

Someone scanning in the aisle is deciding, and the useful destinations answer the question the package could not fit.

Ingredient and allergen detail beyond what the label can hold. Sourcing and provenance, where that is part of the value. Compatibility — will this part fit my model, will this cable work with my device — which is one of the highest-intent scans there is. A short demonstration for a product whose benefit is hard to convey in a photograph. Sizing and fit guidance.

Keep it fast and keep it phone-shaped. Retail lighting is poor, hands are full, and connectivity in a supermarket is frequently bad.

After the purchase: where the real value is

Most packaging codes are aimed at the aisle, but the more valuable scan usually happens at home, when the product is out of the box and someone has a question.

Setup and assembly, which is where a video genuinely beats a printed leaflet. Instructions and care. Warranty registration, which turns an anonymous purchase into a known customer and is the most commercially useful of the group. Replacement parts and consumables. Support, at the moment of frustration rather than after a search. Reordering, when they have run out and are holding the empty pack.

That last one is worth dwelling on: the empty container is the single best-timed reorder prompt you will ever have, and it is already in their hand.

Plan the code architecture before the artwork

Packaging is where the one-code-for-everything mistake is most costly, because the split cannot be added later without new artwork.

Split by SKU where the destination differs, and often even where it does not — knowing which variant gets scanned is product intelligence you cannot buy elsewhere. Split by market where language, regulation or a different offer is involved. Split by campaign or batch if you want to compare a limited run against the standard pack.

Make them dynamic. A package designed today may be in a warehouse for a year and on a shelf for two more, and the destination will certainly change in that time: pages get reorganised, promotions end, support content moves. A static code printed on a two-year shelf-life product is a link that will very likely be dead before the product is consumed.

A code approved on an office printout has been tested on the one material it will never be used on.

  • Curvature. Bottles, tubes, cans and jars distort the module grid. Keep the code on the flattest available area, print it larger than the distance rule suggests, and never let it wrap past the point where it begins to foreshorten.
  • Seams and folds. A code crossing a seam, a crimp or a fold line is a code with a break through the middle of it.
  • Gloss and film. Reflective substrates wash the pattern out under shop lighting, which is exactly the lighting it will meet. Matte varnish over the code area is worth the argument with the designer.
  • Ink spread. Uncoated board and flexible film let ink bleed slightly, which thickens modules and closes the gaps between them — the effect is worst on the smallest codes.
  • Abrasion. Packaging is handled, stacked and shipped. Test a scuffed sample, not a pristine one.
  • Cold and condensation. Anything chilled or frozen will be scanned through a wet or misted surface.

Think in years, not weeks

The distinguishing feature of packaging is how long the artwork outlives the decision behind it. Plan for the destination to change several times during that life.

Keep the destination stable and boring — a durable address you control, not a campaign URL with a season in it. Decide who owns that address and who will notice if it breaks, because the person who signed off the artwork will have moved on. And schedule an actual check: scan a package from current stock a couple of times a year and confirm it still lands somewhere sensible.

A quiet, unnoticed dead link on shelf stock is the most common end state for packaging QR codes, and it is entirely preventable.

Should packaging QR codes be static or dynamic?

Dynamic, almost without exception. Packaging artwork is expensive to change and stays in circulation for months or years, while the destination behind it will certainly move as pages are reorganised and promotions end. A static code printed on a product with a two-year shelf life is very likely to be a dead link before the product is used.

Should each product variant get its own QR code?

Yes, wherever you might later want to compare them. Separate codes per SKU, market or batch cost nothing to create but cannot be introduced retroactively without new artwork — and knowing which variant, which region or which limited run actually gets scanned is information you cannot get any other way.

Where should the code go on a bottle or tube?

On the flattest area available, away from seams and crimps, and printed larger than the usual distance rule suggests to compensate for the curve. Do not let it wrap far enough around to foreshorten. Test on the actual filled container under shop lighting, since a code that reads perfectly on a flat proof can fail once it is on glass.
